English in the Junior School


We use a Structured Literacy approach which is evidence-based and emphasises teaching all of the components of literacy through an explicit, systematic, cumulative and diagnostic approach. 

We use an ‘I do, we do, you do’ model to support learners. 

In Oral Language we teach:

  • Speaking in sentences.
  • Talking about interests.
  • Describing people, places and objects,
  • Asking questions.
  • Listening to and following instructions

 

In Phonemic Awareness we teach:

  • How to isolate sounds such as beginning or end sounds
  • Blending sounds to read
  • Segmenting sounds to spell 

 

In Phonics we teach using the Little Learners Love Literacy programme. 

 

We teach: 

  • Letter to sound correspondences
  • How to blend sounds together to read words
  • How to read decodable books
  • How to segment words for spelling
  • Writing using our phonetic knowledge
